August E-Newsletter

From the Desk of Dr. Beeson:

Did you know?

Beeson Chiropractic Wellness Center has a combined total of over 215 years of health care experience!

Did you know as well?

Our doctors (myself included) and staff are continuously undergoing progressive training to enhance their ability to identify & diagnose the underlying cause of your pain and dysfunction.
This results in your treatment plan being tailored specifically for your needs with the outcome of you functioning at your optimum again, in the shortest time possible!
Getting you out of pain is a part of our treatment plan objective, which often happens before return of function is achieved and stabilized. But what would happen if that is the ONLY goal we have for you?
We would be doing you a disservice by allowing you to not get the underlying problem corrected and stabilized.
Simply put we are here to partner with you to:

  • Find the underlying cause of your pain & decreased function.
    (Exam and initial treatment)
  • Eliminate the pain.
    (The Relief Phase.)
  • Return you to your optimum function.
    (The Correction Phase.)
  • Stabilize that optimum state.
    (Maintenance care.)

This is why I encourage people to follow their care plan through the corrective phase, and not quit when they are “feeling fine”.
I hope this article has helped clarify some things for you. If you have any questions, call me directly at:

Summer Tip:

Recent AAA research shows the summer as the most dangerous time for accidents. The study emphasizes the dangers due to the increased number of drivers that use the roads, particularly carefree teens on summer vacation. We have been helping many, many drivers and passengers who were injured over the last few months to recover their health from whiplash and other injuries. Another report indicated that accidents have increased by 10% this year in Oregon. Be careful on those roads, and if someone you know was involved in an accident, please encourage them to get examined! We have said it before, but we will say it again; injuries can occur at speeds as low as 3mph! Take a look at our blog articles for more information: www.beesonchiropractic.com/blog/

FAQs

Question: Does it matter if I follow my treatment schedule exactly, especially if I’m feeling fine?

Answer: If you change your appointments or substitute your scheduled day for another day (e.g. you are scheduled for this Friday but decide to come next Wednesday instead), your overall treatment plan will take longer and you may not get the results you originally intended. If you are having trouble keeping up with your suggested treatment frequency, you should meet with the doctor.

Question: Am I covered if I get into an auto accident?

Answer: Yes. It is the law in Oregon that all insurance plans provide PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage. It allows you and your passengers, regardless of who caused an accident, to have insurance coverage for “reasonable and necessary” medical, dental, hospital, surgical, ambulance, and prosthetic services incurred within one year after the date of an injury up to a maximum of $15,000. Checklist for the Weekend Warrior

This is the time of year when many of us jam the weekends full of as many outdoor activities as possible, regardless of our physical conditioning. If you or someone in your family has over done it and are experiencing any of the following symptoms, please call us!

  • Painful back
  • Painful Joints
  • Migraine Headaches
  • Pinched nerves
  • Tension
  • Mental dullness
  • Tendonitis
  • Ache all over
  • Ringing in ears
  • Stiff or painful neck
  • Bursitis
  • Fatigue
  • Poor circuluation
  • Neuritis
  • Double vision
  • Muscle swelling
  • Tremors
  • Rapid heart beat
  • Tingling in limbs
  • Nausea
  • Eye strain
  • Muscle spasm
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of neck motion
  • Blackouts
  • Diarrhea
  • Early arthritis
  • Light blindness
  • Nervousness
  • Loss of balance
  • Insomnia
  • Loss of hearing
  • Cold hands or feet
  • Shortness of breath
  • Poor memory
  • Numbness in limbs
  • Periods of depression
  • Anxiety

This time of year I see many patients who have been sedentary during the rainy months, rush outside and overdo it with sports, gardening and other outdoor activities. Normally the mild pain and stiffness due to poor conditioning go away the following day, however, an accumulation of minor injuries can build up over the years and cause just as much havoc with the spine and nerves as a single major trauma. Because these changes are gradual, people “learn to live with it” or are simply not aware of the damage until it is well advanced.

We don’t want you to have to learn to live with your pain and discomfort. Take a couple of minutes to see if you, and/or your family members have any of the symptoms on the “Weekend Warrior Checklist.” If
so, please call us for an appointment – Dr. Beeson

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) for Weight Loss

HCG is a hormone that maximizes the functional capacity of the body’s control centers in the hypothalamus. That one center in the hypothalamus, “the fat bank”, controls the movement and distribution of fat throughout the body. HCG mobilizes abnormal fat and releases it as a source of energy and nutrients. Thus, small amounts of HCG have been shown to mobilize abnormal fat and make it available to the body as a source of energy and nutrients.

The HCG protocol calls for a 500 calorie per day diet. If someone were to start a 500 calorie per day diet without HCG he or she would experience hunger, cravings, feelings of misery and a loss of structural fat and muscle mass. However, a 500 calorie per day diet on HCG, a patient typically loses up to one pound of abnormal fat per day. Each pound of fat contains approximately 3500 calories. If people lose one pound of abnormal fat in one day, that makes 3500 calories available to them. This gives patients access to adequate amounts of energy because the rest of the calories are generated internally through the breakdown of fat deposits (lipolysis). Therefore, the patient is not hungry and loses weight.

Weight Loss Protocol:

  1. Administer 200 units of HCG for 23 to 43 days.
  2. Consume a calorie restricted diet (500 calories per day):

Breakfast: An apple, orange, one-half grapefruit or a handful or strawberries.

Lunch: One type of meat: 100 grams of veal, beef, chicken breast, fresh white fish, lobster, crab, or shrimp. All visible fat must be removed.
One type of vegetable from the following: spinach, tomatoes, celery, beet-greens, chard, chicory, green salad, onions, red radishes, cucumbers, asparagus, cabbage.
One type of bread: One bread stick or melba toast.
One type of fruit: apple, orange, one-half grapefruit or a handful of strawberries.

Dinner: (Same as Lunch)

**A small percentage of patients may experience dramatic weight loss results, while for anyone weight loss cannot be guaranteed. The length of your program will also need to be determined (from 23 to 43 days). The first step is to receive a free consultation with Dr. Madda to determine if the program will work for you. For any person, these diet changes and the time-commitment to the program are required to see results.

Jump start your metabolism and your life
with this medically-researched weight loss program.
• HCG targets the reasons that your body holds
onto weight and allows the pounds to melt away.
• This protocol is based on over 40 years of
research and 15 years of clinical trials.

IT’S TIME…
RESCULPT YOUR BODY
REJUVENATE YOUR ENERGY LEVEL
LOSE FAT, NOT MUSCLE
REDUCE YOUR APPETITE
DISCOVER OPTIMAL BALANCE WITH LASTING RESULTS

Stress Relief

Work • Finances • Personal Relationships
Losses • Improper Diet • Lack of Exercise
Vitamin Deficiency • Irregular Sleep

stressIt doesn’t always take a major disaster to create stress in our lives. Those things do happen, but sometimes just the normal, day-to-day routine puts undue stress on our bodies. Let’s face it, we’re busy people! Juggling work with raising families, trying to keep up with financial obligations, making some attempt to get proper exercise and working hard to do the right things for our bodies can keep us running almost around the clock. We can keep up with it for awhile, but often times busy lifestyles result in stress and health problems. Likewise, the occasional accident or physical injury can create stress as well – or it can be the result of stress, such as an accident that occurs from feeling fatigued or upset.

Stress can be physical, chemical or emotional in origin.

Examples are falls, strains, improper sleep or diet, excess sugar or preservatives and emotional strains. All of these stresses can adversely affect your health, no matter what age you are.

Stress manifests itself in the body in many ways. Some of the most common stress-related ailments are:

  • Headaches
  • Muscle tension
  • Digestive distress
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia

It’s also interesting to note that many pains of “unknown origin” are addressed by addressing stress.

We can help relieve the stress caused by physical injuries and we work with you to develop a program that will prevent health problems in the future.

The only reason we are here is to help you lead happier, healthier lives.

The Spine and Auto Accidents

If you’ve been in an auto accident, no matter how severe, your spine felt the impact.

Your lower back is a very important and vulnerable part of your body. It supports most of your upper body as well as protecting nerve channels to your lower body and organs.

In an auto accident, the lower back very often absorbs a large amount of the impact, resulting in numbness, pain, aches or stiffness. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms it is important to know that something can be done to remedy it. Dr. Dan Beeson has treated over 10,000 people just like you who have suffered from auto and work related accidents. Dr. Beeson started practicing in 1979 and his highly trained staff know how to help you rapidly handle your injury and get back your health and mobility.

If you or someone you know needs help, call and schedule an appointment today.

Whiplash

neck painInformation for drivers, pedestrians and athletes.

An injury to the neck caused by a sudden movement of the head, backward, forward or sideways, is commonly referred to as “whiplash”. While the term “whiplash” is most frequently used to describe auto accident injuries (in which a person is rear-ended, hit head-on, or hit from the side), whiplash can also frequently occur during ski accidents, bike accidents, falls, blows to the head and other head/neck traumas.

THE MYTH: “If I don’t have any symptoms right away, I’m OK.”

THE TRUTH: After many auto and sport-related traumas, symptoms can be so slight at first, an individual may not realize he/she has been injured. Even if a person feels relatively normal after an accident, he/she should be thoroughly examined. Symptoms can be delayed for days, months, or even years.

COMMON SYMPTOMS: The follow are symptoms that can occur following a head/neck injury (days to years later):

  • Neck pain and/or stiffness
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Irritablility
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Dizziness/ Vertigo
  • Pain between the shoulder blades
  • Pain in the arms, legs, feet, hands
  • Headaches, Migraines
  • Low back pain and/or stiffness
  • Shoulder pain
  • Nausea
  • Ringing in the ears, Hearing loss
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Jaw and/or face pain

In many cases more severe immune-related, neurological, pain, and disease conditions (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Susceptibility to infection, ADHD, Seizures, Multiple Sclerosis) can result from head/neck injuries, sometimes occurring many years after the accident.

WHIPLASH FACTS: Two million people are exposed to whiplash injury (related to an auto accident) in the U.S. every year. When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth or side-to-side beyond its normal limits, ligaments supporting the neck vertebrae can be sprained (over-stretched) or torn, forcing vertebrae out of their normal position.

In tests of low speed rear impact collisions, it was reported that the threshold for cervial spine soft tissue injury was 5 mph.

Most rear impact accidents occur at crash speeds of 6 to 12 mph – speeds below the threshold for property damage to the vehicle – but sufficient to cause cervical injury.

Whiplash injuries to the cervical spine can occur in sports (skiing, hockey, football, cycling, ice-skating, gymnastics, boxing) during falls (down a flight of stairs, on an icy sidewalk), and many more!

CAN AN UPPER CERVICAL CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT HELP AN ACCIDENT SUFFERER?

If a person (infant, child, or adult) experiences an accident, a proper spinal exam is necessary to assess whether a neck injury has occurred. An upper cervical chiropractic specialist uses a computerized test known as Surface Myolography (muscle tonicity test) and specific x-rays of the upper neck to accurately assess a neck injury. If a neck injury is found, a specific adjustment by hand is used to correct the injured vertebrae. Correction of the neck injury can improve, reverse, and prevent numerous whiplash symptoms.

Auto Accidents and Disease

9/14/2010

Late Summer 2010
Our staff have recently noticed more accidents on the roads and freeways since the first rains hit Portland and surrounding areas. One of our staff saw three highway accidents within about a mile of each other near downtown.

Roads are certainly more slippery after it rains, especially if it hasn’t rained for a while. Lubricants like oil drip from cars as people drive and these slippery fluids build up on the roads until they are washed away. When you drive after rain, you should be aware that the surface of the road is covered in a thin film of water, oil and grease which makes the road slippery and can cause people to lose control of their cars and increases the risk of an accident.

In this post we would like to provide details on how accidents and injuries, even low speed collisions, can have an affect on how the body handles disease.

The body naturally exists in a state of function and health, it can jump, climb, run, etc. but with each injury or accident the body becomes predisposed to disease. This is a “vicious cycle” in the fullest sense, taking into account the fact that disease can bring about further accidents which bring about further disease.

The magic of chiropractic is that it can actually prevent disease. Look at it this way – the body is not likely to become diseased unless it is operating in a state of mal-function. The true goal of chiropractic is to restore full function to the individual, and factually after an auto accident this can be fairly easy to accomplish and can be very rewarding.

The illness or disease may not occur immediately after the accident.

However, it has been proven that damage is sustained (even in low speed collisions, as stated earlier) and this does increase the chance of disease setting in, with all of the possible symptoms that go along with it.

Scale of Disease Vs. Health

Any person is somewhere on the scale of disease vs. health. A person may have severe disease very early in life, or it may not develop until they’re an adult, or it may never develop at all.

Plainly stated, anyone who has restricted function should receive chiropractic care.

At the start of care, the first thing that occurs is the symptoms lessen or disappear completely.

This usually takes place within the first two weeks of care. Further care addresses the cause of the disease or the disease itself resulting in “no disease”. Continuing care, the body is then strengthened by more treatment and in some cases, exercise routines, so that disease is actually prevented before it can come about. This can be a tough concept to grasp, so here’s an example:

A person has had a rough series of accidents, sports injuries, etc. they then find themselves in a situation where their immune system is weakened – they haven’t been eating well, they’re tired, they’re stressed out from things at home and work. If this person had not received chiropractic care, a disease could occur under those circumstances! But if this person is functioning well enough to handle the potential disease then the disease never has a chance to “latch on”.

The end result of a complete care program is a return of functions.

A returned function may be return of range of motion or ability to use a limb again, increased energy, ability to run again or in short any function that was lost due to accident or injury.

Many of us have suffered trauma and accidents – the thing to realize is that any disease you may be suffering from could be traced back to those stressful times. We have built our clinic with this in mind – we’re here to help!

We invite you to contact us!
